Egg-Shaped Easter Candy Bags

I made these egg-shaped Easter candy drawstring bags for my kids Easter baskets this year. My goal was to make a drawstring bag with continuous loop string instead of one that can slip out and be eventually lost. I also like the idea of the drawstring serving as bag handles. My son's is made in aqua/mint/orange/yellow in a notched stitch pattern, and my daughter's is made in lavender/yellow/pink chevron stripes. I had fun adding the appliqued bunny faces with 3D ears, bow ties and button noses/eyes. They love their bags!

Bunny Ear Warmers & Hat

Last year, I made these bunny ear warmer headbands & beanie hat for the kids' outdoor Easter egg hunt. It was a snowy day, and I wanted their little ears to stay warm and festive. :) This year, they enjoyed wearing them around the house and during their indoor early morning egg hunt. The ears on the headbands are able to stand up with the aid of inserts made from cut-out plastic milk jugs (two cheers for re-purposing & re-using!), while the beanie cap includes floppy bunny ears per my son's request. These were a lot of fun to create, and I'm glad that my kids will get years of use out of them.

I designed this original pattern for a lacy daisy afghan made with octagon grannies. My new baby girl was on my mind the entire time. She's due to arrive around the time daisies will begin blooming here in Western New York, which was my main inspiration for this pattern. I also really enjoy baby items made in non-pink hues, so that's why I opted for an aqua/lavender/yellow color scheme. Don't get me wrong. I like pink. I just think baby girl items can be made in other colors just as well! Besides, purple is my favorite color anyway. The pattern can be found HERE in my Etsy shop.

The octagon grannies are made with white daisies in the center, a lacy circular pattern surrounding them and lacy white borders on each. Inside the square/diamond-shaped spaces between the octagons are smaller yellow daisies with white borders surrounding them. The exterior of the afghan is adorned with a slightly ruffled lacy border. It's definitely a very feminine pattern perfect for a sweet, new summer baby girl!
Because my oldest daughter loved her little sister's set so much, I made her a matching dress. Big sister was so excited to wear hers that she wore it to my baby "sprinkle". Then on one gloriously sunny summer day, we had an impromptu backyard photo shoot with all three of my little ones.
The Rainbow Unicorn

I first got the idea to create this Rainbow Unicorn when a customer contacted requested me to make one for her newborn daughter. She sent a photo of what she had in mind, and I Googled it to see if there were more photos online to get a better view of the design. That's when I found this pattern from One Dog Woof for the "Rainbow Cuddles Crochet Unicorn". Although I didn't use the creator's original pattern, I did reference the design to create my own version, which is a little more plump and shorter than the original. This guy is also made in off-white (instead of bright white) with a mane and tail in softer colors (instead of the original version's bright colors).

My customer is very pleased with her daughter's unicorn. She will be taking monthly milestone photos of her daughter and pudgy unicorn friend. She was sure to send me a copy of the first photo with her baby girl gazing at it and told me they've named it "Rebecca" after it's creator. How sweet!
Instead of a straight yarn fringe mane in pastels, she has curly-cues in bright rainbow hues. She also has lavender hooves and a muzzle (instead of light pink), a sparkling purple horn (instead of yellow) and button eyes and nostrils (instead of appliques/embroidery). My daughter is very pleased. She couldn't wait until I was done making it, so she slept the first night with it when the mane was only half finished.<strike></strike>
The first snuggle bunny I made was for my new baby girl, who is expected to arrive this summer. I made a super soft chevron baby afghan using Bernat Pipsqueak yarn and decided to make a coordinating snuggle bunny buddy to accompany her during nap times.
The first bunny, the pink bunny, was the first I made and was an experiment. I created the head with a 3D puffy-cheeks appearance and used the same fuzzy yarn as the afghan to line the interior of the ears and to add a fluffy bunny tail. Then I appliqued a pink heart-shaped nose onto the face and embroidered the sleepy eyes and mouth in grey.

These were the 3rd and 4th amigurumi crochet projects I've made without a pattern. I'm starting to love amigurumi when it used to seem so intimidating. I've found the key to creating seamless body pieces is working in a spiraling round. It's also important to keep tight, uniformed stitches and undetectable increase & decrease stitches. It takes practice but gets easier with each experience.<strike></strike>

This Little Man Chevron Baby Cocoon and Newboy Hat Set is my own original design. My vision for this cocoon was to create a chevron baby cocoon in soft colors with the top opening in the style of a folded-down collar and button enclosure similar to a men's Henley top.

I also wanted to achieve a more practical cocoon design that would not only be adorable as a newborn photo prop but for everyday use. The button-down front adds to the practicality because it makes it easier for baby to be placed into and taken out of the cocoon.

Because the color pattern of the cocoon is so busy, I made a simple matching ivory newsboy cap and added aqua buttons to match the cocoon.
Here's what Nancy Withers of The Crochet Crowd had to say:
<span data-ft="{"tn":"K"}">

<span data-ft="{"tn":"K"}">

<span data-ft="{"tn":"K"}">I totally agree with Nancy. Crochet IS NOT a dying art. I've said many times throughout my life that I was crocheting when crocheting wasn't cool. Years ago, it was very rare to happen upon a fellow crocheter by chance. However, as the years have progressed, now there are many more crocheters out there (and knitters too--can't forget them!). Now there are crochet clubs, classes at craft stores, crocheters working their yarn magic during their work lunch breaks, etc... I think it's safe to say there are also many daughters and granddaughters carrying on the tradition that their grandmothers and mothers taught them as well as perpetuating through their own children, friends, nieces and nephews. Furthermore, a few years ago, it was unheard of for males to be crocheting or knitting. However, now there are quite a few men and boys picking up hooks and yarn. It's a yarn-working revolution out there, folks!
<span data-ft="{"tn":"K"}">

<span data-ft="{"tn":"K"}">Nancy is also correct about the discounting of our time, creativity and materials costs. I've actually had people purchase my Mermaid Tail Pattern on Etsy for $5.50, thinking it was a finished product and expecting free shipping. One customer even went as far as to say that she felt "deceived" and that I had wasted her money even though she received a full refund. Wow...
<span data-ft="{"tn":"K"}">

<span data-ft="{"tn":"K"}">I've also had people ask why I crochet things when I could just go to the store and buy them for a small fraction of the cost. They just don't understand that it's more than money and time... It's creative expression, it's therapy (as Nancy emphasizes), it's doing something nice for someone else, it's anxiously waiting for someone to open a gift you've lovingly made and melting when their appreciative eyes meet yours and so very much more!
<span data-ft="{"tn":"K"}">

<span data-ft="{"tn":"K"}">I suppose there will always be someone out there who doesn't understand why we do what we do. The same could be said of other artists, whose work isn't appreciated by those who have no idea what goes into it or why. But we crocheters and knitters press on nonetheless! I will work my hook and yarn skills until my fingers are knobby and misshapen and can work no more. I will teach my children when they ask to learn as well as friends and relatives who express interest. I'm a CROCHETER FOR LIFE and am darn proud of it!
<span data-ft="{"tn":"K"}">

<span data-ft="{"tn":"K"}">Thanks to Nancy Withers of The Crochet Crowd for the writing inspiration. :) yarnie_foodie_momx3http://www.blogger.com/profile/07066244724891457443noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2119995971460479396.post-42264781701501000452016-01-31T22:38:00.003-05:002016-09-08T16:14:42.018-04:00Crocheting for Our New Baby Girl

The Reveal

When my husband and I first discovered we are expecting our third child, he left it up to me to decide whether or not we know the gender early. I was quite determined to wait until "birth" day. However, when the doctor asked if we'd like to know, I caved. I don't have enough willpower to wait. Silly me...

So of course I had to crochet a little something for our new baby girl! I made her a tiny, ruffled romper and headband for her to wear during one of her first photo shoots. Can't wait to meet her in July!

Boy or Girl?

Before the big reveal, I had also made a gender-neutral baby afghan. I still love the colors and know we will put it to good use. I wanted to create a unique patchwork-style afghan involving squares with puffy, two-dimensional stars in the middle of each square. I used lightweight yarn for our summer baby and loose stitching for breathability.
I finished my baby girl's afghan today and made a matching stuffed snuggle bunny to complete her future nap time ensemble. I love the luxurious, soothing smooth texture of Bernat Pipsqueak yarn and am sure our little one will find it comforting as well.
The bunny was an experiment. I look forward to seeing my baby girl snuggled up with her little nap time buddy one day.
I originally made this set for my little lady to wear as a hospital homecoming ensemble. However, she wasn't born quite as large as the doctors thought she would be. So... this set had to wait for another day. When she was six weeks old, it finally fit. And just in time! One week later, it was a bit too snug! I can't believe how fast she's growing!

I've been holding onto two skeins of soft, chunky Red Heart Baby Clouds yarn for a while just wondering what to do with it. Thankfully, an idea came to me today! Inspired by the baby swaddling wraps that I personally found extremely clever for both of my children during their infancies, I created this baby swaddling wrap/cocoon. The wrap/cocoon is made primarily of the soft, warm Baby Clouds yarn and is embellished with a lacy edging and flowers made using Caron Simply Soft satin yarn.

I love this set so much that I've also made another in preparation for the arrival of our baby girl as well as writing the pattern for others.

This set is not only photography session worthy but also very practical for everyday use. Below is a little more information behind the design:

The Wrapping "Wings"

The top "wings" of the wrap/cocoon wrap in a crisscross fashion across the front and are secured with large white buttons. The buttons' positions may be adjusted on the panels, so the wrap/cocoon fits tighter or looser per your baby's needs/preference.

The edges of the wrapping "wings" include a delicate, feminine mint green lacy edging. The front-side of the wrap/cocoon is adorned with a decorative color-coordinated flower with leaves and a pearl bead sewn into the center.

The Hat

The hat is made using the same yarn as the swaddling wrap/cocoon body. It also includes a coordinating decorative flower with leaves and pearl bead as well as mint green lacy edging identical to that of the wrap/cocoon.

I chose the lovely main shades of orchid and honeydew melon because they are a fun combination and added a splash of grey and white in the breast feathers, wings and hat for a bit of contrast.

This Baby Owl Cocoon with Owl Hat is of my own original design and features my own originally-designed version of a scale stitch, which gives the owl cocoon a fine, scaly textured appearance. I created this stitch when I designed my Mermaid Tail Afghan because I wanted to achieve something that differed from the bulkiness of the crocodile stitch.

More information about the design:

A - The wings are securely appliqued onto the front-sides and fold over the breast feathers in the center of the cocoon.

B - The breast feathers are worked in a continuous "striping" pattern around the front and back of the cocoon, which means when the cocoon is turned over, there is a stripe of orchid/melon/grey/white with solid orchid at the top and bottom. This makes the cocoon reversible, so both "winged" and "striped" sides could be utilized to change up the look.
I love owls, and I love baby cocoons, so I created this Baby Owl Cocoon with Hat to give to a dear friend for her baby shower. Her husband and I worked together and when he noticed me in the break room making a similar owl cocoon for another person, he said he just had to have one of his own for his baby girl. They are decorating their daughter's nursery in light green and lavender, so this little number fit the bill perfectly. Since then, I have made more of these adorable cocoons as well as shared instructions on how to make it with others.

There are many owl cocoons online, but mine is different. I take pride in that. It may be a similar "concept" as other baby cocoons, but this is my own swing on it. That's what is so great about the crafting world--there are countless crafters out there creating a vast array of beautiful things, and they all inspire one another to use their own creativity to make their own beauty. The possibilities are endless!

PATTERN NO LONGER AVAILABLE

I put a lot of work into creating this cocoon and writing the pattern from scratch. However, I am very sad to say that I can no longer share the free pattern. I really enjoyed sharing it with others and asked for nothing in return except a photo or two of finished projects. The best part of sharing it was seeing so many interpretations in the way of color combinations, embellishments, design adjustments, etc. I also loved hearing everyone's stories about their reasons for making the set as well as their loved ones' reactions when receiving it as a gift.

Oh well... Life does go on... There is no point in stressing over it now. However, I do feel badly for any crocheters who may be in the middle of making this set and now can no longer access the instructions. To those effected, please accept my sincere apologies for this inconvenience.

I will still share photos of owl cocoon sets, which others have made and shared with me. These fellow crochet lovers shared them with me out of pride for their handiwork, and I just love seeing and sharing their creativity and hard work. Below are a few that I have enjoyed receiving so far and have been given permission to share:

I really like when crocheters share photos and stories of their finished projects. Ashley was kind enough to share the owl cocoon set she just finished. She made her set in 3-6 month size. Great work! The colors are fantastic, and I like the subtle sparkle in the grey yarn that she used. A little bling is always a good idea in my opinion. :)

A customer, "M", contacted me in May 2016 with an extra special request. Her niece was having a baby boy, and she wanted to order an owl cocoon which was lively, bright and colorful to suit her niece's bold personality. This is the first owl cocoon I've made for a little boy, so I wanted to make it more masculine. To do this, I changed the shell stitch originally used in the cocoon body and hat to my rolling meadow stitch and used the bright boy colors that "M" and I had agreed upon. To tie all the bold colors together with a neutral element, I incorporated a dark grey into the eyes, wings and breast feathers. I really like how it turned out, and she was so excited to give it to her niece!

The scarf is composed of 10 circular owls and one un-decorated circle at the center of the scarf to allow the owls to change direction and drape right-side-up on both sides of the neck when worn. Each owl circle is crocheted individually, and then every circle is sewn together end-to-end. The eyes and beaks are appliqued onto each owl, and two pairs of feet are added to the owls on each end of the scarf. Around the exterior of the scarf is a mint & aqua border, which not only creates a raised texture around the grey edges of the owls and ears but also frames the owls and adds durability. The scarf measures 53 inches long x 5.5 inches wide.
It took one full weekend, but I did it! Not only that, but I also created two different tail fin styles and a feet pocket panel option.

For a texture that resembles a scaly appearance, I decided to modify my own previously-created version of a scale stitch. Others have inquired if I use a modified version of the crocodile stitch. Although my stitch may resemble the crocodile stitch from a distance, it really is not. My goal was to create a stitch that is much less bulky than the crocodile. Don't get me wrong--I like the crocodile stitch just fine--but I simply wanted to achieve more of a smooth-laying, fine scaly-textured appearance for the Mermaid Tail Afghan.
Minions, Minions, Minions! As you can see, we are Minion-crazed in our household lately. I have been busily processing the requests of my kids and friends to meet their Minion needs. It has been a blast having fun creating these little guys!

Crochet Sweet Pink Lady Minion Girl's Lined Bag

This crochet girl's purse / handbag was inspired by the "Minions" and "Despicable Me" movies. This is my interpretation of how a lady minion might look. She has a frilly pink dress, pretty batting eyelashes, pink bows and pigtails atop her head and dangling legs and arms.

This girl's purse also includes a hand-sewn yellow gingham interior lining, button flap closure at the top of the minion's head and convenient shoulder strap.

The main bag portion measures 7 inches wide by 8 inches tall with a depth of approximately 2 inches.

This hat, inspired by the "Minions" and "Despicable Me" movies is made-to-order by me using soft yarn. This hat can be custom-made in any minion facial expression desired (within reason). The goggle eye(s) is(are) crocheted separately and appliqued onto the hat; the mouth is embroidered or appliqued depending on the design; and the hair is added as the finishing touch.

Minion Ice Pop Cozies

These unique and lovingly detailed "Minions" inspired ice pop cozies are perfect for protecting little (and big!) fingers from frosty-cold ice pops. Both ends of each cozy "sleeve" are open, so they can be slid up the ice pop with ease while pushing the yummy ice inside to the top.

These are not only cute but practical as well. There is no need to waste paper towels each time your kiddos enjoy an ice pop treat because these can be used multiple times. If they become soiled, just pop them in the wash! Also, when summer is over, they'll make adorable finger puppets!

Minion Mini Dolls

This little, snuggly doll version of "Kevin", the big brother of the "minions", is the latest addition to my minion crew. Of course I had to consult Google to investigate this further. Lo and behold, ice pop cozies are "thing" after all!

These unique and lovingly detailed ice pop cozies are perfect for protecting little (and big!) fingers from frosty-cold ice pops.

Also, when summer is over, why not re-purpose and play with them as adorable finger puppets?

Mermaids, Dragons, Unicorns and Dinos... Oh my!

Because my kiddos are into all things whimsical, I decided to create a set of four fun ice pop cozies to start. My first set consisted of a mermaid, dragon, unicorn and dinosaur. They are highly detailed with 3D appliques, embroidery and button eyes. For children under 3 years old, I can make the eyes with crocheted appliques and embroidery instead of tiny buttons for obvious safety reasons. These cozy creatures can be found in my Etsy shop and by clicking on the photo link below.

Chilly Arctic Critter Cozies

My next idea came about then considering critters, who are accustomed to the Arctic chill. What better to accompany a frozen treat than these little polar bear and penguin ice pop cozies! They are created with 3D applique and embroidery as well. These cozy critters can be found in my Etsy shop and by clicking on the photo link below.

Sophisticated Garden Party Flower Cozies

The idea for these festive summer garden party themed cozies came to me one day after spending time in my garden among the posies. How cute would these be for a garden-themed party, a little girl's birthday party or even a bridal shower? These floral cozies can be found in my Etsy shop and by clicking on the photo link below.

This adorable crocheted tote bag is 18" x 16" x 3".

The exterior is made in luxurious and stylish Bernat Satin yarn, which is super soft and has a smooth satin-like sheen. The top portion of the bag is a trendy thin-striped chevron pattern in grey and white, and the bottom is my own mermaid scale design in aquamarine. Canvas lines the interior of the bag to help secure valuables, and it has sturdy exposed-canvas handles.

Unlike the crocodile stitch, my mermaid scale design is much simpler and uses much less yarn. That's what I love so much about it. The texture is similar, and there is both a time and cost savings!

It's also easy to launder--just wash in warm/cold water and dry on medium heat.

It is available in my Etsy shop as a finished product as well as my very own written-out pattern.yarnie_foodie_momx3http://www.blogger.com/profile/07066244724891457443noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2119995971460479396.post-66880066896711835782015-06-12T15:28:00.002-04:002015-06-12T15:28:31.980-04:00Crochet Lace Infinity ScarfI was yarn shopping one day and discovered the softest, silkiest baby yarn (Bernat Softee Baby) in the perfect shade of soft peach. Even though I had no idea what do make with it, I bought it anyway.
Weeks went by. The yarn sat in my stash teasing me to come up with a use for it. Then it occurred to me... why not a lacy infinity scarf!

I created this lovely, soft and feminine lacy infinity scarf with an open, detailed lace design. Because of its airy design, it's perfect to wear in late summer or early fall, and it would also make a fine accessory for warmer winter days.

I also wrote the pattern, which is available in my Etsy shop.
These unique wine bottle holders/bags/carriers are made using up-cycled blue jeans. I love finding new uses for otherwise discarded things. It not only reduces waste but creates something truly unique and special.

These wine bottle holders would be adorable for a country chic picnic, a gift/care basket for a wine lover or even a bridal shower gift.

The base of the bags are hand-stitched and crocheted as well as the handle and flowers decorating the top.

Two styles are available--one in aquamarine & navy and another in salmon and ivory. Because they're so unique, there are only one of each available.yarnie_foodie_momx3http://www.blogger.com/profile/07066244724891457443noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2119995971460479396.post-72466757051680303902015-04-15T23:19:00.000-04:002015-06-12T15:19:05.279-04:00Crochet Ladies' Lacy Chemo Cap

A few days ago, a former high school classmate contacted me. She explained the situation of a friend and co-worker of hers, who has fought breast cancer and had a radical mastectomy. She also described her as a fellow nurse with a big heart, who is not only determined to kick breast cancer's butt but to also take care of her family and patients simultaneously. Since chemotherapy has caused the loss of her long, beautiful hair, she is concerned about the affect her appearance may have on her patients. Now THAT is a true definition of nursing compassion!

My schoolmate asked if I would create a chemo cap for her friend and donate my time and materials. Needless to say, of course I said yes! Then I set out to make it as special as possible. Since her friend is a nurse in her 30s with a young, fun, loving personality. I wanted to make her something really special. Because this is the first time I've made a chemo cap, I asked fellow crocheters and knitters for advice. She needed something functional yet fun... soft enough that it wouldn't irritate her scalp... lightweight yet not too light that it would fall off during care giving... light enough to cover her head but not too warm... etc. Taking all of those elements into consideration, I envisioned a lacy-patterned cap that would be feminine, soft, breathable, cool and functional.

Here is what I created!

What I created for her was...

A free-form crocheted lacy-patterned cap that is feminine and pretty;

It's made with super-soft, silky baby fingerling yarn;

It's breathable due to the open lacy pattern, allowing for plenty of air circulation to keep the wearer cool;

Its open lacy pattern is fine enough to conceal uneven hair growth without worrying about it poking out through wide holes;

It's functional because it fits snug around the face with a pretty scalloped border. Fitting snugly is important as to prevent slipping off while bending over (or in a medical field of work--caring for patients); and

Because it is free-form crocheted, it's unique. Like snowflakes, no two hats made in this style will be identical. The style and basic design will be the same, but each time a hat is made, the stitches in the lacy patterns will be unique. I call THAT an added plus!

The day after I created the pink lacy hat, I couldn't resist making another but this time in a neutral color. This one is my favorite of the two because it can be worn FIVE different ways. It has three decorative buttons on the front and can be worn as-is, OR the wearer can choose to simply slip one of the four flowers over the largest button for a fun, funky look.

It warms my soul to do this for her. She is a complete stranger, but that doesn't matter. My sincere hope is that by wearing this lovingly-crafted hat, she will feel beautiful and confident. I also plan to make her another cap in a different color and style, so she can change up her look and have an alternative to wear when one is in the wash.

I realize how important it is for women in similar circumstances, who may feel a bit like they've lost a fraction of their femininity, to feel pretty and a little less self-conscious during their time of transition. That is why I'm offering this cap at a reduced price in my Etsy shop. I want to help serve people like her, who are fighting their own battles against the beast called cancer. Family as well as friends of cancer warriors (like my schoolmate) can make special requests to make something truly unique for their loved one. All I need to know is a little about the recipient's personality, color preferences and certain details about their lifestyle (such as hobby, profession, activity level, etc.) to ensure their custom-made cap fits as well as meets their individual functional requirements.

Thanks for stopping by and reading about my latest adventure. A few weeks ago, my friend informed me that my mystery client LOVES her hats, and that makes me the happiest crocheter on earth. Since then, I have made numerous hats for others purchasing for friends or family. Most has responded that their loved one is very happy with their hats. I am so pleased to hear this. <3
It's been fun exercising my creative spirit!

This Baby Mermaid Tail Cocoon Outfit for newborns to 3-month-olds is my latest creation. When I designed it, my goal was to create something unique. Many of the mermaid baby cocoon outfits I've seen use the crocodile stitch, which I like but think is too bulky for a tiny baby to wear; whereas, my scale stitch is much more delicate and smooth-laying. There also are very few pink mermaid outfits available or those paired with a starfish bikini. Furthermore, I've never seen another crochet spiral shell applique on a headband either.

I am accepting custom-orders for the finished version of the Crochet Baby Mermaid Cocoon Outfit as well as making the crochet pattern available for sale in my Etsy shop.

I think this cute little number would be so adorable for a baby's first photo shoot, as a show-stopper baby shower gift or better yet--both! Although my pattern and the original design includes the graduating striped appearance, it could be also be custom-made by me or a pattern purchaser in a solid color.

The scale stitch included in the pattern is my own version of the stitch, which gives the mermaid tail a fine, scaly textured appearance. The stitch may resemble a smaller-scale version of the crocodile stitch. However, I assure you it is not created in the same manner. It's actually created much more easily!

Aside from the mermaid tail cocoon itself, my favorite part of this ensemble is the headband adorned with a starfish, seashell, pearls and iridescent beads. The crochet seashell is of my own design as well! I also need to give my daughter credit where it's due because it was she who allowed me to use a few beads from her stash to complete the headband.

Creating this baby version of the mermaid tail was a blast! I love what happens when I simply let my creativity run free!

I also have to share this little snippet! One of my friends liked the headband from this outfit so much that she requested an adult-size version. Here she is wearing it after running the Yuengling Shamrock Half-Marathon in Virginia Beach on the weekend after St. Patrick's Day. :)
I thought, "What a clever idea!" Then I said to myself (as do many other experienced crocheters or crafters...), "I can make my own version of that!" After all, I have the perfect, little whimsical lover of all things fantasy in my daughter. She makes an ideal test subject!

So from that Friday evening until the wee hours of that Sunday morning, I crocheted my heart out to make my girl her very own mermaid tail. I made the mistake of telling her what it was while in the middle of it. So of course every other row I worked, she would ask excitedly, "Is it done yet?" On Sunday morning, she awoke to her new finished mermaid tail. Oh, to witness the excitement on her dreamy little girl face--it was a privilege!

The CHILD-size pattern can be found here, and the ADULT-size pattern can be found here.
Update (April 6, 2015)
Since creating my daughter's mermaid tail, I have created another child-size afghan for a customer, to give her 8-year-old daughter as a birthday gift. As I was taking photos of it for my Etsy shop, my 4-year-old son wanted to model it for me. He said, "Boys can be mermaids too!" Well... I happen to think he's the cutest little merman I've ever seen!

About the Design

As with most experimental crochet design ideas, I like to create something new (and quite frankly something I'm not so sure will work out) using my existing yarn rather than purchasing new. It just happened that in my bountiful yarn stash, there were just the right colors and quantity. I had plenty of sage green, pale green and just enough light blue. Because these are all shades that also reminded me of ocean hues, I went with it.

For a texture that resembles a scaly appearance, I decided to create my own version of a scale stitch. Below is a close-up photo of the texture:

As for sizing of this afghan, I make my version a bit wider than others because I like to provide enough room for comfort for the wearer. I also make mine a bit longer than average and have custom-made them even longer for especially tall people. My rational for sizing this afghan the way I do is so that a person can pull it up to his/her chest or snuggle down inside it while laying down.

Since my first attempt at the Mermaid Tail Afghan turned out so well (and judging by my girl's reaction), I decided to list it as custom-made item in my Etsy shop. Right away, I received four orders. The response was unbelievable! Then I began receiving requests for the pattern, so I decided to write it out and offer that in my Etsy shop as well.

The original child size afghan fits ages 4 to 8 comfortably. However, it can be made to fit a taller child or "tween". The pattern includes instructions for lengthening the afghan.

I had a great deal of fun creating these Mermaid Tail Afghans and patterns! I worked very hard to make them available and love seeing others enjoy them just as much as my daughter and me. In fact, the most rewarding part about sharing them is hearing my customers' stories of who they're making them for and why. Most make them as gifts for their daughters, grandchildren, nieces and friends. And then there are adults, who want to make themselves a little something to tickle their whimsy. It makes me smile just imagining all those little (and big) mermaids at heart out in the world... I love it!

I need to give a big shout out to one of my crochet buddies, who is also quite experienced in toying with her own crochet designs from time to time. Thank you, Jill, for agreeing to lend your expertise in providing constructive criticism and an extremely useful critique of my pattern writing skills! Without your eagle eye, I would have missed a very important typo in my pattern. I can't wait to see your finished afghans and to hear about your nieces' reactions when they receive their very own mermaid tails! :)

As you can tell, I'm excited to share my Mermaid Tail Afghan design! It's a great feeling! Enjoy and feel free to visit my blog again any time!

She picked it up at a yarn shop in Canandaigua, NY one day as she was window shopping. It was one of those gifts "just because", so it was a nice surprise when I received it.

This yarn is so soft and luxurious that I was nervous to use it. I know other crocheters feel the same. I just couldn't decide the best project for it. I suppose it's a little like fine china that people save only for special occasions. Then one day, I realized that savoring it simply to look at it, pet it... admiring its luster... was silly! Why do we save "special" things for "special" occasions, when we could be enjoying them "just because"? Why... I don't know.

I'm now happy to say I'm enjoying wearing this yarn every day! I'm certainly enjoying it more than when it simply sat in my yarn stash serving no purpose other than to admire it once in a while! Here is my latest creation--something for me for a change! I made a colorful new newsboy hat embellished with fun flowers and buttons, a chevron scarf in magenta and violet and coordinating fleece-lined mittens each embellished with a flower to match the hat.

I love having a palette of yarn to play with and make something truly unique!

Through this experience, I've realized that I very seldom take the time to make myself something new. It was a nice treat to do just that! I decided it feels nice to spoil myself once in a while, and I should do it more often!

So... Go grab that "special" item you've been saving for a special occasion and enjoy it now. What are you waiting for anyway? ;)

Recently when my daughter was feeling under the weather, I decided to crochet something to brighten her spirits. When I asked what she would like, she requested a rainbow scarf with a smiley-faced cloud on one end and a pot of gold on the other. So of course that's what I made!

I also interjected some ideas of my own. I crocheted the rows of the scarf using the "shell" stitch, which I feel gives it a more delicate, feminine appearance. On one end of the scarf, I incorporated a reversible sun peeking out from behind the smiling cloud on one side and smiling broadly on the opposite. On the other end of the scarf, I made sure there were two mirror image pots of gold sandwiching the end of the rainbow. Both scarf ends are double-sided, so there will be no "wrong" side facing out when worn. This rainbow scarf is definitely colorful and suits my daughter's chipper, creative personality perfectly!

As you can see, there is a great deal of unique applique work and detail in this scarf. I feel these elements give the finished product great dimension and character. The fluffy cloud includes button eyes, an embroidered mouth and appliqued rosy cheeks. The sun (complete with triangular rays) includes button eyes and an appliqued mouth. Each pot of gold includes 19 individually appliqued and sewn-on gold coins (38 total).

Since my girl has also been admiring my newsboy hats lately, she naturally wanted one of her own (and of course to match her scarf!). She also wanted a pair of rainbow "glittens" (aka convertible mittens) to complete the set. So off I set to make her dreams come true yet again... Late one night, I laid the finished set at her breakfast place setting, anticipating her excitement upon discovery. She was so pleased that she made me a special sweet drawing to show her appreciation. Aww...

The colors for this set are flashy, yes, but everything is exactly as she requested. The hat and main hand portion of the "glittens" could really be made in any color to coordinate with the scarf. She just happened to choose pink. :) It's the same with the buttons--any color would do. That's part of the beauty and freedom of a rainbow theme!
